Ryland Homes - Decks will collapse
On April 5 a sub called me o help him work on a deck in Randallstown md. The first thing he asked me to do was pour 6 80 lb bag of concrete into 6 holes.
when I looked at the holes I saw that they were dug way too wide, somewhere between 24-30 inches in diameter. I told him ,Ron was his name that after spreading out the concrete it would be barely 2 inches thick. Code is 8 inches. I said we should build a box 12-12 at least and pour the concrete in or dig a smaller hole deeper to make it 8 inches thick but he said he was not making enough to take the time to do it.
He said it would be the superintendents fault when the deck sags. I could not believe his attitude. I wanted to e mail Ryland homes to warn them but could not find an email address. Hopefully someone will read this and warn them because the cost to fix them later will be a lot more when they sag and pull away from the house.
I have been in this line of work for 25 years and I have never seen anyone do a foundation that skimpy. Especially when he knows its not going to hold up.
